M9 ?STRANGE FRUIT? REVIEW

When I first heard the Triple Darkness collective I was sure that it was going to be the start of a very lucrative time for UK hip hop, but I didn’t realise just how prolific these cats were going to be. First we had “Anathema“ the single, which was followed closely by the LP, then they turned up to support Redman and Method Man AND Immortal Technique at their London shows, as well as regularly rocking the mic at Speakers Corner/End of the Weak. And now we move on to their individual efforts.
M9 is the latest emcee to offer up his own personal take on the art with his single, “Strange Fruit”, is set to drop at the beginning of October and if you dug Triple Darkness’ other material, this will not disappoint. First up is the title track, “Strange Fruit”, which is produced by another Style43 favourite, the mighty Jon Phonics. As you’ve come to expect from Mr P, the beat is blessed with a blasé quality, in stark contrast to the lyrics, which give a gritty view of the urban decay that is rife in so many UK cities right now.
Up next is the B-side, “Paintbrush”, featuring Melanin9’s partner in crime, Cyrus Malachi, along with Masikah. This time the sound-smith is Chemo and yes, it’s a very murky track. A lot of theological mental imagery is conjured up from the three emcees and this adds to the sinister feel already provided by Chemo’s trademark style.
This is a taster for M9’s full length album, “144,000”, which also drops in October and I’d urge people to cop both releases as soon as you can.

H20/TRUE VALIANCE/STRENGTH APPROACH, LIVE REVIEW!

Arriving at The Croft in Bristol, I witnessed the might of True Valiance, a local band who have recently signed to the exclusive and notorious Rucktion Records. The room was packed as the first support band took to the stage. You could clearly see the anticipation on every kids face down at the front.
They started with an intro track that had enough energy and build up in it to make me want to start moshing along with every kid down the front. The intro smoothly merged into the song “Take Your Life Back” and it got even crazier. There was a real intense feeling of motivation coming from the crowd, these guys are shit hot and everybody knows it.
Driving guitars and an unstoppable stage presence give this band a power that they have over most hardcore bands, who else could be on so early and get the room moving? Not many I tell you! As the set moved forwards so did the hype from the crowd. They even chucked in a brief Slayer cover between tracks which went down really well, as nearly the whole crowd whooped in excitement. If you haven’t seen these guys yet I suggest you do, an awesome band with an awesome sound.
Next up on the bill was Strength Approach, I wasn’t really sure what to expect after a previous performance so I went in and stood at the front, waiting for the kids to cram in and start moshing. Surprisingly not many did, there was a massive gap between the audience and the stage, the band took a while to sound check, which was quite boring as everyone just wanted them to get on with it, when they finally started they had a good sound but no stage presence. This really let them down and I could tell that they are probably used to a better reaction from a crowd. The band on the whole were tight, well organised and played some pretty good stuff, it’s a shame that nobody moved for them. Strength Approach gave a good clean performance, the drummer was strong and consistent and vocals were strong.
The sheer build-up and anticipation in The Croft was immense, you could hear everyone chatting excitedly to each other as they waited for the headline act, the mighty H20!
As the band got on stage and picked up their instruments Toby Morse looked out into the crowd, cheers were erupting from all parts of the venue. There was a pause and then the band dropped into “1995″. A sudden rush of people ran to the front and started singing the lyrics back, the atmosphere was intense. To be fair I didn’t do my usual thing of standing to the side taking notes, I was straight in at the front singing along to the NYHC legends. Everyone was having a thoroughly good time, people were jumping up and down, fists raised and singing along. The band were on form, sounding exactly how I imagined them to sound live.
There was a real feeling of positive fun and energy in the room as everyone jumped about and crowd surfed, the fourth song in was the awesome “I see it in us”. Toby got the crowd going by making everyone sing along, the chants were loud and clear, then the song kicked in and more movement followed, everybody was going fucking mental!
At one point a big looking bloke came up to me and boosted me on top of the crowd during the song “Thicker Than Water”. Sweat was being flicked off of peoples hair, water was being thrown at the crowd, and everybody in that room had a smile on their faces. The band were energetic as you’d expect, running and jumping around with Toby Morse leading the way parading up and down the stage throwing the mic out to different parts of the crowd for a mere second at a time so that the ones underneath it would sing along harder and louder.
This was an intense gig, and the whole place was buzzing with the H2O vibe, I don’t think I’ve ever seen as many people going off like that in The Croft before. If you missed H2O on this tour, I’d seriously suggest getting a flight to the U.S and trying to find a show over there!

DEAL WITH IT END TIME PROPHECIES.
Girlfriends can fuck off. They make you miserable and make you worry about things and you end up letting your mates down. To help me sort out my heart based problems, I’ve been listening to the new Deal With It record, End Time Prophecies. Trust me, you can definitely judge a book by its cover when the legendary Edward Repka is the artist.
I got Mike (dude who sings and does official moshing) to explain it to me, and it’s essentially a lizard who is standing in front of an archway which contains a vision of the future, people getting smazzed to nothing by illuminati triangles. Shit is deep. A lot of the album is about this type of negative aspect of society, the album actually has a theme. Their first record, World Coming Down, is as tough as Justice Tripp (google it) and definitely one of my favourite hardcore releases of recent years. WCD helped Deal With It secure their place as a hard band and once you hear End Time Prophecies, you can track their progression towards a much more thrashy sound.
The highlight for me is the fact that Mike sings. A lot. But it’s absolutely amazing that they’ve managed to put out a stonking record, get faster and had the guts to get singing in there too. Personally, I think it is a strong look and has paid dividends. Too many bands allow themselves to be pigeon holed or gain success from one type of music and so stick to it and never expand. Plus within hardcore there are so many people who think their strict and incredibly narrow minded opinions are right, and everyone else can fuck off. They tend to be the same people who don’t ever, ever mosh but stand their with folded arms wearing their ‘I’m a critic‘ expression. Justice’s Escapades record got a slating, but it’s a belter. Somehow I don’t think Deal With It are going to get any stick about End Time Prophecies because it’s so good and it’s still hard.
Streets of Rage II has an intro which is straight out of an 80’s power ballad, and then suddenly pow! You’ve taken a windmill to the tits and you’ve dropped your irn bru. Atlas Shrugged has some of the best singing on the record. Too many shredding solos and the like to name or keep tabs on.
I am well tired so this may not be super coherent. Basically, Deal With It have done a fucking awesome thrash record with the best cover art you’re likely to see from a hardcore band in a while. It grows on me more each time, I could write lines and lines of praise because I really like them as a band and Mike is such a king. You know where to find this shit? Either here for a little try before you buy, and then to buy both records, some shirts and pre order the Dirty Money/Trapped Under Ice split 7″.
Heed my Words!
DMC DJ WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP, LONDON 26TH/27TH JULY!
The DMC World DJ Championships 2008 are being held on Friday 26th and Saturday 27th September at Indig02 in London. International heats are taking place now, across the globe, and if the UK competition was anything to go by, once again standards have been ramped up a notch this year.
This year’s UK heats are done and dusted; the finalists travelled to Islington Academy on 17th July for the DMC UK DJ Championships and after a hard fought competition, DJ Skully was crowned the winner. Placing first in the competition means Skully is now set to represent UK turntables in the solo DJ category and will compete against the cream of the global DJ crop at this years competition.
Representing the UK in the Battle for Supremacy - a head to head scratch battle of wits, techniques and ability is DJ Switch. This young turntable wizard has stood up to the competition and emerged victorious for 3 years in a row now, retaining his dextrous deck dominance since 2006. Needless to say we’re expecting big things from him this September!
The world finals mark the culmination of months of fierce competition in countries across the world including Japan, USA, Australia, Canada, China, Brazil, and Bulgaria. The winner here in September will be the best of the best, period.
The championships have been running for 24 years now and have helped launch the careers of a galaxy of stars from the DJ world ranging from early winners like the UK’s Scratch Perverts, Plus One and Cutmaster Swift to legends like Q-Bert, C2C (4x DMC World Team Champions), DJ Cash Money and Beastie Boys DJ Mixmaster Mike, through to new names like DJ Craze, DJ Netik and last year’s German winner Rafik who played showcase sets at all the UK Heats.
This years event is hosted by the DMC’s favourites MC Trip, Killa Kella and Billy Biznizz. Day tickets are only £15 although we fully recommend seeing both shows for £25, available from DMCWORLD.COM, the ticketmaster website and Indig02 website. Not to be missed!
BLACK EYE KILLORADO
So the Black Eye Killorado Frame is now available in the US from Dans by clicking here.
In my opinion this has to be one of the worst BMX frames I’ve ever seen but none the less Cory Jarman does shred on that frame even if it is of scooter proportions. See the frame in action in this Season Web Video below and voice your opinion.
CHASE HAWK WEBVID
TATE ROSKELLEY: THAT?S IT
The 50:50 video, That’s It, has been one my favourite BMX videos since it came out. Combining a wide range of riding styles with some amazing editing generally leads you to an awesome vid, but this one even had an amazing vibe and atmosphere to it as well. Anyway, one of the stand-out parts came from a relatively unknown dude (Unless you saw his old Shook part), Tate Roskelley. Defgrip have just put his part online so either click here to watch it on their site, or right-click here to download it straight to your computer. Do it!
I should probably also point out that That’s It is still available from all good retailers, blah blah blah. It’s well worth buying - Cameron Wood and Mike Aitken have so many bangers it’s unreal, Dave Thompson is as amazing as he was in Like Totally, and Matt Beringer is Matt Beringer - ’nuff said.
SERGIO
I’m not a BIG fan of trails but I am of Sergio Layos and Kings of Leon sooo……
MATHIAS DANDIOS & ADAM KUN
very few of you will have the attention span to watch this, and even less of you will even be able to comprehend what and how mad some of the stuff done in this video is, just take my word for it, its all impossible..
DANNY WAY? NO FUCKING WAY?
